Spring weather is upon us and putting more pep in our step! Bulbs and trees are in bloom and the birds are singing! We love getting to spend more time outside in the warmth of the sun. Trainees learned various propagation methods this month and we were able to apply what we learned to propagate over 50 new blackberry plants and several new lavender plants that we are excited to add along the fence line. These plants are perennials so will last and produce for years to come. The longer days and warmth is bringing the garden to life. We dusted off our mower and had our first mow of the season and are hooking up hoses to have more regular waterings.
Our greenhouse is quickly filling up with tons of seed trays as trainees are learning how to sow seeds and care for seedlings. We’ve even transplanted our first seedlings of arugula into the several raised beds with more crops not far behind. We have pruned our existing fruit trees and were delighted to find out we received a generous donation that will allow us to develop a fruit orchard with various fruit trees and berry bushes. We continue working on re-mulching our pathways and planters to keep weeds at bay. Compost piles are being turned more often to generate more compost to prepare our soil and our CSA room is under construction as we update the space for better organization and beautiful upgrades. Volunteer Bryan has been doing a ton of tilling for us, getting our planting spaces ready for planting. We’ve had a few more CSA sign-ups and are hoping to have four more individuals or families join us. Be part of the beauty of this season and receive bountiful amounts of organic locally grown food that allows our trainees the wonderful opportunities to learn and grow in their garden knowledge as well as job training skills.
